England to Launch the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected entry for a competition hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s game since eight years ago, when Turkey were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to welcome the national team for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Launch and Protest
The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they approached the location by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Signs were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The opening game of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will feature Wales if they secure a place.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for European club finals from next season, will cater to family audiences and help engage a more diverse set of viewers.
Participating Countries
The Irish team are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that miss out on the finals through that route.
Stadiums and Playoffs
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground round out the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches staged at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Tournament Vision
“It will be a championship for the fans and a celebration of everything we love about the football – its fervor and ability to bring people together.”
In excess of three million passes, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are expected to be made available to fans.
