Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
