In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial amount.

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.

This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different individual.
