Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born musician and performer whose captivating voice played a key role in spreading reggae music worldwide. The artist has died at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and positive temperament earned him a large and longstanding following.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
