The sport of boxing is in a real slump this season, with few major fights and considerably fewer engaging contests than usual. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena provides some solace to the struggling sport. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, apart from three losses, he has been sent to the canvas repeatedly by various fighters. He consistently rises but Wardley hits harder than any fighter he's fought – with the omission of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only began his boxing career when he was twenty, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is similarly close to a opportunity for the championship.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have taken a risk when neither of them needed to make this fight. Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Joseph wants to fight anyway.

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not focused on a loss. I have respect for my rival and what he has done and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on Saturday.”

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my professional life and the biggest fight of my life. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. Saturday will be no different. The divide between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a lot of fights on his resume. By no means is he an senior boxer but he has been in the sport for a while and had several tough bouts. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker should prove too veteran, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a hard-fought contest with the confidence that he is next in line for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a significant margin.
