New York's next mayor affirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, was not quick to announce this decision promptly following his triumph in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will forever remain a part of me and my work," he added.
Political Debate
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
