Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the hit program coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
