What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
